The Ego Problem

The problem with egos is they are either too big or too small.  In my work as a psychologist everyday I see people far too concerned about what others think of them.  Comparisons are always at the heart of this crazy game that much of the world plays.

There are those people who expend much energy attempting to maintain a certain image because of pride and vanity.  They wouldn't dare be caught in public without makeup or dressed in an outfit that doesn't follow the latest fashion trends.  This is beneath them because they always have to look better than the other person.  Inwardly they see themselves as better than others or at least in their heart they feel they need to be better.

There are many more people who, in their comparisons, feel they don't measure up.  They see themselves as inadequate, not as good as..., or less than... Efforts to be like someone else always seem to fall short because deep inside they believe they will never be good enough.

What a waste of time and energy to live your life everyday concerned about what everyone else is thinking when, ironically, they're not paying that much attention to you anyway.  Do yourself a favor and try this.  One day leave your ego at home in the closet.  Don't concern yourself at all with what others think.  Go out into your world with the sole intent of helping and lifting others.  When we serve others we catch a glimpse of what it is like to not be burdened by our ego, because we are not thinking about ourselves but rather we are thinking about someone else.  After trying this one day do it a second day then a third.  Keep adding more days together and let's see if you can get rid of this "ego problem."
